Negros has emerged as one of our favourite destinations in the Philippines. Its rugged, untouched landscapes left a mark on us that we simply could not forget.

Our decision to road trip across Negros was born out of spontaneity — armed with little more than a car, a backpack, and the trusty guidance of Google Maps, we set out on an expedition marked by serendipity. It quickly became apparent to us that comprehensive travel advice was scarce for this colossal island, and thus, our journey unfolded organically as we stumbled our way around the island discovering the best things to do in Negros.

Negros, nestled in the heart of the Philippines, is the 4th biggest and third most populated island in the country. Its strategic location makes it easily accessible from neighbouring islands such as Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor, and Panay.

This captivating island is divided into two distinct regions: Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental. While popular destinations like Bacolod and Dumaguete draw many tourists, Negros holds a wealth of hidden treasures awaiting exploration across its extensive landscapes.

Accessible through a picturesque 15-minute walk in the forest, the journey to Casaroro is a delightful adventure made even more enchanting by the absence of crowds; during our visit, a modest 10php entrance fee granted us exclusive access to this natural wonder. While opting for a guide is possible, navigating the route independently proves to be a straightforward and rewarding experience.

Pulangbato Falls and Hot Springs

Pulangbato features a natural hot spring, offering a serene escape to bathe in its therapeutic thermal waters renowned for its skin-friendly mineral content. While indulging in this soothing experience, it’s advisable to avoid the midday heat on typical Philippine hot days.

It’s advisable to navigate it with a 4×4 or moped rather than a compact city car. The unique local caving experience at Obong Cave requires careful manoeuvring through narrow paths, guided by a friendly but non-English-speaking guide. Despite its modest size, the golden sand beach boasts a visually striking appearance, making it a perfect spot for a refreshing dip.

Obong Cave is one of the most underrated and adventurous things to do in Negros! However, if you’re even slightly claustrophobic, it’s best to skip this one.

The highlight of our journey was discovering a magnificent waterfall nestled in the heart of the island. Although it appears small from the viewing deck, the beauty remains undiminished. To properly appreciate this natural wonder, a one-hour hike is required. The charming trek takes you through forests, rice fields, and across streams before arriving at the falls. The lengthy walk is unquestionably worthwhile, especially when you get to experience this breathtaking waterfall up close.
