I showed off photos of our secluded wooden jungle cabin with its outdoor shower, gliding doors and balcony overlooking an azure river. Suspended slightly above the ground, the cabin intertwines with the trees, its architecture becoming one. The accommodation is undeniably aesthetic – Its use of wood and soft white fabric blend perfectly with the surrounding jungle.
‘Moving continents now’, jokes our family group chat, envious of our exotic escape.
We made the drive to the cabin late, arriving in the harrowing darkness. Met by the local housekeeper, we were accompanied down to our accommodation. The jungle felt eerie at night. It wasn’t until the sun’s early morning rays illuminated the curtains, enlightening the cabin, that we were able to appreciate its beauty.
Jungle Hut is a pioneer AirBnb in Siquijor, seamlessly blending nature, rustic living and luxury. The wilderness entirely inspires the concept of the cabin, utilising every twist and turn the trees offer into the design. The owner has used his experiences travelling to create a striking accommodation in the heart of the jungle, combining affordability with comfort.
The accommodation produces a charmingly cosy atmosphere infused with a touch of indulgence. The furniture is made entirely from wood and locally crafted. Its spacious bed on the upper floor is tucked with comfy pillows, blankets and a princess-esque net encasing the bed. The highlight is the 360-degree pivoting window, allowing you to dangle your feet fully over the edge.
The sofa nestled in the corner is adorned with luscious crimson pillows, adding a splash of colour to the aesthetic. The window shelf above is cluttered with old books, prompting you to break away from technology. Accompanied by my chamomile tea and the starry night sky, riffling through these books became my solace in the evening. Jungle Hut’s homely atmosphere drew me in and enticed me to stay indefinitely.
Jungle Hut is unlike most nature accommodations. Its location feels secluded but is delightfully accessible with a 15-minute ride to the nearby town of Lazi. Situated on the island of Siquijor, guests are in for a treat – breathtaking sunsets, bright blue waterfalls and powdery beaches. However, the cabin is an attraction in itself. You could easily spend all week here without feeling the need to venture elsewhere.
The accommodation is shrouded by shrubbery and towering trees, invisible to the main road. The sliding glass door opens onto a balcony, home to two deck chairs adorned with plump cushions, overlooking an emerald river encased by the jungle’s greenery. Several Plumerias surround the river bank, blooming bright colours contrasting the green foliage that encases us.
Adjacent to the humble cabin, guests can stroll through the garden to the Enchanted River – Its own secluded slice of paradise. Its crystalline waters and small fish entice you for a dip, beckoning a refreshing relief from the sticky climate on the island.
As I swim lazily in the river, embracing its cold water, my eyes follow the pod of tiny fish exploring nearby, intrigued by my presence. The birds sing proudly in the distance, high up in the trees. Nestled along the river bank, the resident cat lets out a petite meow, convincing me to give him a gentle stroke.
I was graced by the presence of the Philippines’ famous Tokay – A medium-sized Gecko with brightly coloured spots. Its loud call piercing the night had made me aware of their nearby presence, but I had doubted I would see one up close in all its glory – It was more magnificent than I had imagined.
At night, if you aren’t ready to part ways with the jungle, you can simply slide open the door and allow the sound of croaking frogs, echoing lizards and rustling trees drift inside the cabin.
Despite being rural, the accommodation has a fully equipped kitchen with water, tea, coffee, and a cafetiere supplied. There are plentiful power sockets; nonetheless, I doubt you will be charging too often during your stay. Wifi is available; however, the area suffers frequent power outages.
Choosing to stay in Jungle Hut provides you with immediate immersion in nature. For us, it created the utmost desire to disconnect from our technology and enjoy the small moments. For others, sustainability, eco-tourism and nature immersion are their main reasons for visiting. And while the price tag is just $75 per night, luxury nor comfort is compromised.
A vacation in this bucket list accommodation is truly an unforgettable experience, allowing you to reconnect with nature, refresh in the secluded river and enjoy your morning coffee with a breath of fresh air.
