The Ultimate North Cebu Itinerary

Perhaps you’ve heard that all the best spots in Cebu are down south. While South Cebu is blessed with azure waterfalls and powdery beaches, North Cebu has just as much charm – with the bonus of half the crowds! That’s why we’ve crafted this epic North Cebu itinerary to help you explore the best of this beautiful region.

Our trip is based in the islands north of Cebu – Bantayan and Malapascua – which means the first part of the journey requires a morning of travel from Cebu City.

From Mactan Airport, head to the Cebu North Bus Terminal and take a bus or van bound for Hagnaya Port. Once you arrive, hop onto a ferry headed for Santa Fe, Bantayan. The entire journey takes approximately 5 hours from the city.

If you hate public transport, you can book a private transfer straight from the airport to the port.

Day 1: Reaching Banatayan

Your journey begins as you arrive on Bantayan Island. This North Cebu tourist spot is famous for its powdery white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters.

As the morning will be used travelling to the island, it is best to spend your afternoon lounging on Santa Fe Beach, feeling the stress melt away as you adjust to island time. If you get a chance, purchase some fresh scallops to cook up! They are delicious, not to mention the cheapest you will ever find them.

Head out to MJ Square in the evening and explore Bantayan’s epic nightlife, try the famous blue drink at Liquido (which is bound to make your head spin), and enjoy the delightful array of restaurants.

Other Things to Do in Bantayan

  • Visit the Ogtong Cave, a hidden underground pool perfect for a refreshing dip.
  • Explore the Kota Park and ruins, remnants of a Spanish-era fort.
  • Take a sunset stroll along Paradise Beach, known for its picturesque rock formations.
  • Join a local cooking class to learn how to prepare Cebuano dishes.
  • Explore Baigad Lagoon Beach

Day 2: Island Hopping & Sunset

Wake up early and embark on an island-hopping tour. North Cebu beaches are some of the most beautiful in the Philippines, and today you’ll discover why.

Visit Virgin Island, known for its pristine sands, and snorkel in the vibrant waters around Hilantagaan Island.

For lunch, feast on fresh seafood at a local eatery – the catch of the day doesn’t get fresher than this!

End your day watching the sunset at Kota Beach. Sunsets in the Philippines are truly gorgeous, with vibrant hues of red and orange dominating the sky most evenings – don’t miss out on this experience!

Day 3: Exploring Malapascua

It’s time to head to Malapascua Island, another jewel in North Cebu’s crown. This island is a diver’s paradise, famous for its thresher shark sightings. Even if you’re not a diver, you can still enjoy the island’s beauty with a leisurely walk around its shores.

For the adventurous, try cliff jumping at Lapus Lapus Cliff or explore the underwater world with a snorkelling trip. As night falls, join a sunset yoga session on the beach – the perfect way to unwind in Cebu’s serene atmosphere.

Things to Do in Malapascua

  • Visit the iconic Malapascua Lighthouse for panoramic views of the island.
  • Explore the underwater beauty of Gato Island, a marine reserve known for its reef sharks and colourful coral gardens.
  • Relax on the pristine sands of Langob Beach, often less crowded than other beaches on the island.
  • Take a short boat trip to Kalanggaman Island, famous for its long sandbar and turquoise waters.
  • Join a traditional Filipino fiesta if your visit coincides with local celebrations, usually held in May.

Day 4: Scuba Diving & Travelling Home

If you are an avid scuba diver, today is the day to dive! The thresher shark dive begins at the crack of dawn as this is the best chance of meeting these magnificent creatures. We highly recommend diving with Malapascua Thresher Shark Divers, due to their organisation and entertaining crew!

You can also dive at Gato island, another cool day trip which takes you through a 5-minute underwater cave, with a high likelihood of seeing white tip reef sharks.

If you aren’t a diver, spend the morning relaxing on the beach, snorkelling and exploring the island.

Then, it’s time to bid farewell to this island paradise and make your way back to Cebu City.

Before heading to the airport in Cebu, stop by the famous Fort San Pedro or Magellans’ Cross for a slice of Cebu City’s history. Grab an afternoon snack at Carbon Public Market and pick up some dried mangoes and danggit (dried fish) – perfect souvenirs from your North Cebu adventure.
